Tired of jamming in your parents basement to crowds that are non-existent and a life where you biggest fan is your mother receiving nothing other than the roar of chirping crickets as they mock you with their silent laughter? If so then Converse has good news for you as “Get out of the Garage” is back to give S.A’s unsigned talent the chance of a lifetime!
In a music industry where profit margins dictate the best-selling artist which is dependent only on the marketing team’s dedication to the artist and the brand it’s refreshing to see a corporation make an attempt to find something unique and propel them to stardom, when the tunes warrant it of course. So with that in mind “Get out of the Garage” was born in 2012.
Dare I say too little too late?
138 Unsigned bands participated in last year’s competition. The rules were simple, upload your BEST QUALITY track in SoundCloud format via http://www.facebook.com/converse the chance to win a recording session at Rubber Records in Brooklyn, New York City and follow it up with a performance at London’s famous 100 Club, situated in the heart of London at 100 Oxford St. and perform in a club that has been at the forefront of promoting new music since 1942! Now that’s retro!
After much deliberation Matthew Mole was dubbed the winner of last year’s inaugural competition and got a shot at the big time! His trials and tribulations can be viewed below:
Now that makes my heart pump custard-aw! It is indeed true that after 105 years in the industry Converse have decided to give back to the cool cats and creative hipsters who supported the brand by having an open online audition for any band/act/musician in South Africa where you too could stand the chance to be granted the same opportunity and have between now and 15 August 2013 when the judges; Catherine Grenfell, Jon Savage and Reason have successfully thinned out the heard then Converse will favourite on Facebook. The rest is up to the music and the people as they become the whispers of conversations that appear on the Twitter-sphere;
And with the help of the App available at http://www.facebook.com/converse which is coincidentally where the fans who follow can win the opportunity to spend the experience with their favourite band VIP-style as they are whisked off to London for the show. With the first tier of selections complete and the proof in the tunes that stood their ground after being scrutinized it’s up to you the fans to dedicate yourselves to people who are doing something truly profound with their lives by simply being who they are and sharing the frequency of their internal radio station to people willing and grateful to listen. Time to make magic happen so we can see the deserving get their props for “Getting Out of the Garage” when the overall winner is announced on 16 September and we wait to see where their story will take them after they join the line-up of “Rocking the Daisies” and what their music could mean to us?
